SRO now has 2010 Fishing Licenses!

3/9/10 - I had a great weekend in Conn. at the Cabelas, thanks for everyone coming out to visit. Met a lot of really nice people and I am looking forward to them visiting! Not many people on the river today after a pretty busy weekend. We are getting some snow melt and I noticed the creeks were a little milky today. In the SR there are a mix of fresh fish, pre-spawn fish and fish that are already starting to dig on the gravel. White egg sacks, black stone-flies, sucker spawn and good old fashion earth worms were reported to be the "hot" items. We are getting fathead minnows in and I am sure they will work pretty well.

3/8/10 -  Fishing was good over the weekend it was all about being at the right place at the right time. Fishing was also good in the Lower Fly Zone. There are a lot of fresh steelhead and browns in the river.

3/7/10 - Fishing was good on Friday & Saturday. Lots of fishermen are landing fish everyday. Kevin has been cleaning and smoking fish both days.

3/4/10 - Fishing is a little slow right now but getting better everyday. The Lower Fly Zone is doing really well right now. The fishing is getting better from the Altmar Bridge down to Ellis Cove. A couple of fishermen stopped by the Tavern today and said they landed 4 fish the 1st hour that they were at the Barrel. The hot bait right now is the stoneflies, egg sacks and pink worms.

2/28/10 - Out fishing this weekend with Glenn Poore. Th water was low (285 cfs) and clear and it made for pretty tough fishing. The early bite was ok and then things really slowed down. Glenn was able to catch several smaller fish in the 2 pound range and ended up also landing two nice fish that were both pretty fresh. The black stones were hatching everywhere and that seemed what the fish wanted to eat. We actually saw a couple of reds but we did not see any fish near the gravel.

2/25/10 - There has not been much going on the Salmon River. The fishing below the fly zone has been pretty slow but the guys in the fly zone are still doing well. Here is one of the many big Steelhead Taylor caught in the lower fly section last weekend.

2/24/10 -Sean & Don Wiggins caught this nice Steelhead with guide Dan.
2/21/10 - Saturday was a great day of fishing. The hot spots were from the Altmar Boat Launch to the Wire Hole. The Fisherman also had a great day in the Lower Fly Zone.
2/20/10 - We are getting about 6" of fresh snow everyday for the snowmobiles. The fishing is doing well. The fisherman are landing a few fish each everyday. The fisherman are using trout beads, stoneflies, eggs and the pink worm. They are doing well from Ellis Cove up to the Lower Fly Zone.
2/18/10 - We have 6" of fresh snow from yesterday. Fishing is doing really well in the lower fly zone. It's also doing well in the schoolhouse pool. Kevin & Harry went out fishing for a few hours on Tuesday, they had a couple of hook-ups Kevin landed a steelhead Harry landed a brown trout.
2/14/10 - Yesterday started out a little slow by early morning the fishing picked up and the fish were active the rest of the day. The guys at the lodge had 2 good days of fishing landing several fish.

2/3/10 - snow report. Here at the lodge we have been getting 2-6" of snow powder each day but the hill has gotten more and they have about 4' of powder on the ground (check out the web-cam). All the reports are that there has been light pressure this week and the trails are in excellent shape.
2/3/10 - the fishing remains good with fresh fish coming into the river and with relatively warmer weather the fish are more active. We will be in Harrisburg beginning this week so if you have a chance come in and visit us!
1/31/10 - We only got about a foot of snow this week but the sledders all told us the trails were great. We are supposed to get 6-12" of snow tonight and a little through the week so I imagine the trails will continue to be good through next weekend.
1/31/10 - There are only a few givens in this world but one is that on the day of the Steelhead tournament it will be COLD! This year we began at -13 and it got as "warm" as 9, and no that is not wind chill! But after all, I think after 5 years we would all be disappointed if the weather was any better, well maybe not for the guys from Virgina! The fishing was a little slow on Saturday, (today it is on fire) but everyone had a great time and there were some nice fish caught. The first place winner for steelhead was Nathan Buel with a combined, length + girth,  sized fish of  49" fishing with Captain Dan. The second place fish and only an inch smaller was Lou Calabrese fishing with Guide Oliver. The first place Brown Trout was a very nice trout with a combined size just under 40" caught by Mike Clark fishing with Capt. Ric. We had a great dinner on Friday and lots of laughs and good fishing memories on Saturday. Thanks to Brenda for setting up the tournament and Nancy and Kevin for all of their help! I suggest you sign up for next year's now as the spots are limited but the fun is not!
1/27/10 -This morning there was 6" of new snow on the ground and expecting more, good for the snowmobile’s. Yesterday was an excellent day for the fisherman. The fisherman reported catching and landing a lot of fish. The hot baits are pink worms, sucker spawn, egg sacks and night crawlers.
1/24/10 - Yesterday was a great day for fishing. There were brown trout and steelheads that came into the fish cleaning station.  3 steelhead over 12lbs came in also a big brown from the schoolhouse pool. John and Mike staying at the Salmon Heaven Lodge reported landing a total of about 20 fish yesterday.

David.jpg

1/21/10 -Yesterday started out as a cold day but warmed up in the afternoon to be a nice day. Here is a picture of David with his 1st steelhead on the Salmon River.

1/20/10 -It's good for the snowmobiles we have a foot of fresh snow on the ground. For the fishermen the river is at 285cfs, lots of fish. The fisherman are still hooking-up and landing steelheads. Hot bait is trout beads, stoneflies, and pink worm.

1/17/10 - Yesterday the fishermen reported a good day on the river. The reports were from the mud hole up to the fly stretch they were catching and landing fish. Taylor is staying at the SRO this weekend with a couple of buddies that never fished for steelheads before. They are now hooked on steelhead fishing, they caught their 1st steelheads yesterday. The hot bait is stoneflies and trout beads.

1/14/2010 - The fishing is still good a little slow, but we are going to have a good weekend the weather is above freezing for the weekend. The fishermen coming into the Tavern are reporting landing a few fish. The fish are hitting on stoneflies, pink worm and the trout beads.

DSCF1096.jpg

1/11/10 - Brian and Mark were out fishing with me on Saturday and despite below zero temperatures all day, we had a great day and hooked several fish. Brian landed two and fought several more. It was Mark's first time to the SR and although he did not land any fish, he fought several and had a few bite under the float. Unfortunately, he had the drag freeze up a couple of times and on a couple of other times the fish just won the battle! The fish bit on white egg sacks and egg patterns. We were not able to get any fish to bite on plugs today. Reports from the snow trails were good although they are getting a little beat up today after a good weekend. The groomers will be out again this week making for good trails for the end of the week. Kevin and I will be at the Edison show from Thursday - Sunday so come by and say hi, we would love to see you!

1/9/10 -Fishing is good on the Salmon River, lots of fish, cold weather and snow. The hot bait is stoneflies.

1/8/10 - More fresh lake effect snow today. The fisherman coming into the SRO today reported landing a few fish. The fish are still feeding on stoneflies, sucker spawn, and the pink worm below floats.

1/07/10 - The few fishermen that were on the river reported that there were a lot of fish and the fishing was ok - good. George, staying at the lodge, reported that he had several fish on and landed 5 (it was not to long ago when 5 fish in the winter was considered a great day now it is an average day!). With 5-6 inches of snow everyday the snowmobile trails are reported as excellent.

1/6/2010 - We are getting fresh snow every day that’s good for the snowmobiles. The river is at 285 CFS and there are lots of fish in the river.

1/02/10 - Things are looking great on the Salmon River. Reports from our guides (while a lot of lodges and guides are ice fishing or snowmobiling our guides are fishing!) is that there are a lot of fish but they were not on the bite the last couple of days due to the large low pressure system that came through. Having said that, we are still hooking up with several fish a day. The snow trail were a little beaten up today form high traffic but, with reports of snow everyday until ? and constant grooming, they should be excellent in a couple of days.

12/26/09 - today was pretty tough fishing with steady 30 - 40 mph winds. We worked hard but dave landed two nice fish on the center-pin. Both fish were caught on the natural colored Berkley trout worm. We had one other strike on the plugs and that was pretty much it for the day. Still a great day on the salmon River.

bud122409b.jpg

12/24/09 - just got off the river from a 1/2 day trip, fishing was slower then it has been but we landed three fish, two dark and one chromer, and lost two more. two came on plugs (green and red hot shot what other colors would work on christmas eve day?) and one on the center-pin with a pink berkley worm. have a great christmas everyone and i will be back on the river saturday!

12/24/2009-Yesterday we got some lake effect snow. The fishing was slow yesterday in the morning but the afternoon it picked up and ended with a good day of fishing.

12/23/09 – Same old report good fishing and light pressure. The AM bite was reported to be excellent with the PM a little slower. Today is my last day of school and I will be out fishing the next 5 days except for Christmas so I will be able to get some more details for you about the fishing. I do not have a fishing trip this Christmas so anybody looking for a trip Christmas day has been great for me the last four years! Since I am not booked, I can do a trip for two for $250! Give us a call. Sleders – we are getting snow as I type. We will probably end up with about 8 inches of powder today. Friday and Saturday sound a bit sketchy with the possibility of some rain/ sleet but will end as snow. The rest of the 10-day forecast calls for some snow everyday.

12/22/09 – The River is now at 335 CFS reports of catching and landing fish is still good. The fishermen are still catching the fish on the pink worms & trout beads. The browns are biting on pink egg sacks. Fly Fishermen are doing well in the lower fly stretch.

12/21/09 – Same old story, cold temps but very good fishing. The fish have settled into their traditional winter holding spots although there were a couple of reports of fresh fish in the faster water. Seemed as the fly fishermen had a bit better day then the float fishermen but everyone we talked to at the shop/ lodge caught fish. Hot items were San Juan bubblegum worm and the “NF” beaded nymph. Not much snow so it still real good for the wading fishermen.

12/20/2009 - Another cold day on the Salmon River! The fishing slowed down a bit today for the float fishermen but the fly fishermen reported a good day. The hot flies today were Kevin's San Juan and his special "NF" bead-head (you'll have to ask him but it caught a lot fish today!). Seemed like the guys were spending a lot of time in the SRO Tavern having a couple of beer's, Nancy's homemade Pizza and Brenda's Chili but who can blame them!

12/19/09 - It was another cold day on the river yesterday but the fishing is good. The fish are being caught on stoneflies, trout beads, and pink worm. There is a few fish coming into the fish cleaning station.

12/18/09 - It was rather cold on the river yesterday but the few people, very light pressure, that fished said they had their best day ever fishing on the river. Two guys that stopped in to get a nice hot breakfast said they lost count of the number of fish they caught. Hot items have been stoneflies, troutbeads and jigs. Back trolling from the drift boats has also been very good. It is a little cold but you cannot beat the action and lack of pressure on the river right now.

12/17/09 - today was cold and snowy but the few fishermen that were out had another very productive day in the top 1/3 of the river. sledders - we got about 1 foot of snow today and the reports are that the hill got about two. check out the pictures of a few of the fish we caught from the last three weeks that were just sent to me!

12/16/09-It was another good weekend on the river. The fisherman at the lodge said there was a fresh run of Brown's that came into the river. They are also seeing fresh Steelhead in the river. Yesterday a customer brought in a 15lb steelhead to show us. We are also getting a couple inches of new snow everyday with temperatures below freezing in tug hill area for the snowmobiles.

kev121009b.jpg

12/11/09 - The Tug Hill continues to get blasted with lake effect snow getting 1-3 feet per day which is great for the fishery and for the sledders and, the Salmon River cooridor is getting very little of the snows making it great for the wading fishermen! The river is running at 750 cfs and the fishing is as good as I have ever seen it. I have had two snow days (I have had 5 in the last 3 years!) which has given me time to work with Brenda, Kevin and Nancy and get things at SRO running really well. Our supply of center pining reels, rods and accessories are fully stocked and the meals at the Tavern, including homemade pizza, Nancy is serving are by far the best around. Anyway, back to the fishing. Finally, Kevin and I got enough accomplished we could go out and play for awhile. I anchored and put the plugs out under the Altmar bridge and bang, five minutes and a nice buck landed, 5 minutes later and bang another although we lost him on the rod exchange. No problem, put the rods out and bang, another buck. Three fish in twenty minutes. I told Kev. we need to move or we will never make it down the river. We passed people fighting fish from well above the barrel to down below. We got to the tail of the Schoolhouse and there was no one so I told Kev to put the lures out and as I was saying there should be a fish, bang, this time a big chromer came crashing through the surface and jumped and ran for a good ten minutes before Kevin landed. We missed two other fish before we moved to the wires. Again, as soon as we lowered the rods bang, this time we lost the first two but in a matter of minutes we were locked up and Kevin landed his 4th fish, a big 30 inch long with an 18 1/2 inch girth. Maybe not as big as the chromer but a nice fish. Well by this time it was getting dark so we packed it up and headed down to Pineville. We ended up 4 for 9 in what was a 1 & 1/2 hour trip form Altmar to Pineville! Like I said in the beginning, it is as good as I ever remember it!

12/9/09-Good news for the snowmobiles we have snow on Tug Hill and are expecting 3-4 more feet of snow by Friday.

12/8/09-Kevin and Nancy were out fishing on Tuesday fishing was good Kevin landed 3 for 4. Tuesday night the river goes back to 750 CFS.

12/5/09-Friday was a Great day on the river for catching steelhead. There was a lot of fresh steelhead hooked and landed. The fisherman that came into the tackle shop and tavern said it was a great day on Friday and Saturday. They were catching most of there fish on flies, egg sacks and trout beads. The hot spot is the school house pool and around the Altma boat launch.

12/3/09- Reports of the guys coming off the river-is that there is alot of fresh steelhead and browns in the river. The guys also report there is a fresh run of cohos in the river.

12/01/09 - December is here and it is looking a lot more like it should. A little of cold rain on Monday and a bit of snow today brought in some nice chrome fish. The guys at the lodge reported great days in the fly zone and on the upper part of the river. I had a cancellation on Saturday so I will be wiling to do a trip for $250! Let me know if you are interested - Harry

bud1.jpg

bud1.jpg

11/29/09 - Harry is back from "out west" and has fished the last 5 days having good success. Three of his trips have been with center pinners and then he has had guys that mixed up between floats and some plugging. All have produced fish. Three guys, Bud, Paul and Ron, caught their first Salmon River Steelhead. Bud's first steelhead was a 14-pound hen! Right now we are averaging about 10-15 fish on and landing 3-5. In the last five days the fish are starting to settle into more traditional winter holding spots. The fish have been taking white and blue egg sacks and trout beads. Back trolling from the drift boat has also been very productive. At the shop, Kevin reports that people are coming in with good reports of fishing and big fish! Blue and natural sucker spawn and roe eggs along with the traditional stoneflies have been hot flies. Ken please send me some pictures so that I can add them to our report!

11/21/2009- Harry & Kevin went "west" had a fishing trip with Payge & Chris. They had a great time there 1st time "west". They had several hook-ups and landed 10+ fish each. They each landed several browns, rainbows and steelheads and had a great time. Check out the picture gallery

11/20/2009-Today was another good day on the river a lot of hook-ups and landing fish. Kevin has some fish coming into the cleaning station everyday and still smoking fish.

11/19/2009-Despite the low water the fishermen are still catching and landing a lot of steelhead and brown trout.

11/15/09 - Things are very good at SRO! On Wednesday I had a trip on the SR with two center-pinners and we landed four steelhead and they fought 13 (check out the youtube video on the homepage).  These steelhead are full of life! As we were making our way down to the boat ramp, we lowered the plugs and bang, hit a nice Brown trout. Despite the low water we are still catching nice Brown trout in western New York. This weekend we caught a couple of fish in the 14 -15 pound range and several Steelhead, Rainbows and Brown Trout in the 4 - 8 pound range. The guys are averaging about ten fish landed per person.

11/03/09 - check out the nice buck that SRO guide/ 1st mate Tom Haines recently shot with his bow!

11/02/09 - Took a weekend off and Kevin and I went out "west" to do a little trout fishing. Friday we stopped by a creek on the way out and it was loaded with fresh kings an a few browns. On Saturday we fished 18 mile and had a great time center pinning. We landed 25 trout, steelhead, rainbows and browns; on the pin rods plus broke off numerous kings. Kevin was using egg sacks and I caught most of my fish on trout beads. Most of the fish were in the 5 - 8 pound range although we saw a few Browns pushing 14-16 pounds. On Sunday we hit the creeks between 18 mile and Rochester and did ok with Browns and Rainbows. It was bright sunlight and some of the locals told me that it was pretty good during the AM. We had fish in front of us but they didn't want to eat anything we presented them. Word is there is still a lot of Steelhead being caught in the SR.
